Why Hydration Matters More in Summer - Especially After 50
There's a lot to love about a Cheshire summer. Afternoon tea in the garden. Gentle walks in the sunshine. The flower beds in our sensory garden at their absolute best.
But warm weather asks a little more of our bodies, and that's especially true as we get older. So this week on Clubhouse Life, a few words on the simplest wellbeing habit of all: drinking enough.
Why hydration gets harder with age
Here's something many people don't realise. As we age, our sense of thirst naturally becomes less sharp. You can be genuinely dehydrated without ever feeling thirsty. Our bodies also hold slightly less water than they did in younger years, so we have less in reserve on a hot day.
Some common medications can affect fluid balance too. If you're ever unsure how yours might, your GP or pharmacist can advise.
What to look out for
Early signs of dehydration are easy to miss or mistake for something else. Keep an eye out for:
Tiredness or feeling a little foggy
Headaches
Dizziness, particularly when standing up
A dry mouth
Darker urine than usual
The good news? Prevention is simple, pleasant, and doesn't have to mean forcing down pints of plain water.
Small habits that make a big difference
Sip little and often through the day rather than waiting for thirst
Enjoy your cuppa — tea absolutely counts towards your fluids
Eat your water too. Cucumber, melon, strawberries, tomatoes and soups all help
Drink a little more on warm days and after any activity, even gentle gardening
Make it delicious. You'll drink more of something you enjoy
How we make it effortless at the Clubhouse
That last point is the thinking behind our all-day hydration station. Throughout the day, members help themselves to chilled lemon and cucumber water with added electrolytes — refreshing, lightly flavoured, and far more tempting than a plain glass of tap water.
We also serve drinks at every sitting, from your morning arrival cuppa through lunch to afternoon tea, and our team offers gentle hydration reminders through the day. Nobody has to think about it. It's simply part of how the Clubhouse looks after its own.
Because the best wellbeing support is the kind you barely notice — you just feel better for it.
